Frequently asked questions
Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free in FY 2025-26?
Under the new regime, yes — the Section 87A rebate makes tax zero when taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh. Salaried taxpayers also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so salary income up to ₹12.75 lakh can be tax-free.
Which regime should I choose?
The new regime is the default and usually wins unless you claim large deductions. As a rough rule, the old regime only helps when your total deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest) exceed ₹4–5 lakh at higher incomes. This calculator does the exact comparison for your numbers.
What are the new regime slabs for FY 2025-26?
Nil up to ₹4L, 5% for ₹4–8L, 10% for ₹8–12L, 15% for ₹12–16L, 20% for ₹16–20L, 25% for ₹20–24L and 30% above ₹24L, plus 4% cess.
Are surcharge and cess included?
Yes — 4% health & education cess always, and surcharge above ₹50 lakh taxable income (capped at 25% in the new regime). Surcharge marginal relief is not modelled, so verify very high incomes with a CA.
